Car rental in Podgorica: fleet, terms and a price with no surprises
Peak Rent a Car is a local agency based in Mojanovići, right by Podgorica Airport. Here is everything people usually ask before renting in the capital — in one place, with no small print.
Our fleet in Podgorica
We run economical hatchbacks and saloons with five seats — model years 2015 to 2022. Choose petrol, diesel or hybrid, and for city traffic and the hairpins towards Cetinje and Kolašin there are cars with an automatic gearbox too.
Every vehicle is well maintained and serviced before handover, with air conditioning and unlimited mileage. Each car has its own page with specs, photos and a seasonal price list.
The line-up includes the Citroën C-Élysée and C3, Peugeot 208, Toyota Yaris (hybrid), VW Golf, Škoda Octavia, Opel Astra and Fiat Tipo, plus the Renault Captur and Citroën C4 Cactus crossovers for a bit more room and a higher seat. We don't currently offer large SUVs, convertibles or vans — every car takes five passengers.
Driver requirements: age, licence, documents
The minimum age is 21, with at least one year of driving experience. At pick-up you show a valid driving licence and a passport or ID card.
Foreign visitors with an EU or EEA licence drive on it. Licences issued outside Montenegro, the EU and the EEA also need an International Driving Permit (IDP). An additional driver is added to the contract in advance.
Rental terms: deposit, mileage, cancellation
The rental price depends on the season and rental length, and you see it upfront with no hidden fees: no prepayment and no commission — you pay at pick-up in cash or by card. The refundable deposit is €100, and with the Summit package you rent with no deposit.
Mileage is unlimited. Cancelling up to 48 hours before pick-up is free, and changing dates or the car costs nothing, subject to availability. You can arrange a rental extension by phone or message while you have the car.
A rental day is 24 hours from pick-up, and returning more than an hour late counts as an extra day — so enter a realistic drop-off time. The rental agreement is signed at pick-up; you pay in cash or by credit/debit card.
Insurance and driving rules in Montenegro
Mandatory third-party liability insurance is included. The Comfort package (€12 a day) covers damage to the car and roadside assistance and lowers the deposit; Summit (€20 a day) adds tyres and glass and needs no deposit. You choose in step two of the booking.
On the road: dipped headlights are mandatory in daytime too, everyone wears a seatbelt and the alcohol limit is 0.3‰. Traffic fines and tolls are the driver's. Leaving Montenegro is only possible with our written permission and a Green Card — let us know in advance.
Good to know upfront: the Comfort and Summit packages do not include theft protection, and no package covers damage caused by drink-driving or driving on unpaved roads. Cars are serviced regularly and checked before every rental, so road safety is the first layer of protection.
How much car rental costs in Podgorica
Daily rates across our fleet range from €27 to €64. They are lowest off-season and for longer rentals — an economy car for a month is the cheapest per day, while summer and short rentals cost more. The exact amount for your dates is on each car's page, in the price table.
What's included and what isn't: third-party liability insurance, unlimited mileage and regular servicing are in the price. Fuel, tolls, parking and fines are not, nor is extra protection (the Comfort and Summit CDW packages) or equipment. No hidden costs — every extra is shown before you confirm.
Day trips by car from Podgorica
Podgorica sits in the middle of the country, so almost everything is a day trip away: Lake Skadar and Virpazar are about 25 km, Cetinje about 30 km, Ostrog Monastery and Nikšić about 50–55 km. The coast — Bar through the Sozina tunnel or Budva via Cetinje — is roughly an hour away.
Heading north, the road runs through the Morača Canyon towards Kolašin and Biogradska Gora National Park (about 100 km). That's the stretch where an automatic and Summit protection for the tyres pay off.
Driving, fuel and parking in Podgorica
The speed limit is 50 km/h in town and 80 km/h outside, unless signs say otherwise; traffic rules and signage follow European standards. The main city arteries are Boulevard of St Peter of Cetinje and George Washington Boulevard, with the heaviest traffic on weekdays around 8 am and 4 pm.
Parking in the centre is paid by zone and settled by SMS, while outside the centre and at shopping malls free parking is easy to find. Petrol stations sit on every road out of town — you fill up with unleaded 95 or 98, or diesel, and pay in cash or by card.
Extras and car delivery
In Podgorica you collect the car at the airport, in the city centre or at the bus station — you pick the place and time when booking. Delivery to other towns (Budva, Kotor, Bar, Tivat…) costs €20, and you can return the car in another town.
An additional driver is €3 a day and a child seat €30 for the whole rental. Add your flight number, an out-of-hours arrival or special requests in the notes so we know when to meet you.
Online booking in three steps
On the car's page you tap “Book now”: choose dates and pick-up place, then a protection package, then enter your details. You see the total before confirming and get the booking confirmation by email. Book ahead for summer — that's when the fleet fills up fastest.

Six things worth knowing before the first bend
The short briefing we give every guest when we hand over the keys — so you can drive around Montenegro relaxed, with no surprises on the road.
Coast road & tunnels
The coast is linked by the Adriatic highway — scenic, but narrow and full of bends, so allow more time than your map suggests. The only toll is the Sozina tunnel between Podgorica and Bar (about €2.50); the Smokovac–Mateševo motorway section is free.
Speed & lights
50 km/h in built-up areas, 80 km/h outside them, up to 100 km/h on the motorway. Dipped headlights stay on all day, everyone in the car wears a seatbelt, and the alcohol limit is 0.03% — so the rule is simple: if you drive, you don't drink. Speed cameras are common at town entrances.
Parking on the coast
Budva, Kotor, Tivat and Bar use paid parking zones (roughly €0.50–1 an hour), paid by SMS or at a meter. Old towns are closed to cars — leave the car at the car park by the gate and walk in. In July and August, arrive early in the morning.
Heading north
Durmitor, Žabljak and the Tara canyon are unmissable, but the roads are mountain roads and filling stations are few. Fill the tank in Podgorica or Nikšić, and outside summer check the forecast — the weather changes quickly at altitude.
Fuel
A litre of petrol or diesel costs about €1.50–1.65 (2026). Along the coast road and in larger towns, stations stay open at night. You collect and return the car with the same fuel level, so top up before drop-off.
Borders & help
Driving into Croatia, Albania or Bosnia is only possible with our written consent and a Green Card — tell us when you book. Emergency numbers: 112 general, 122 police, 124 ambulance, 19807 roadside assistance. For anything about the car, call us directly.
Questions before you book
How does booking a car in Podgorica work?
Choose your dates and car on the site, pick a protection plan and send the request. We get back to you by phone, WhatsApp or email to confirm. There's no prepayment — you pay the full amount only when you collect the car.
Where do I collect the car in Podgorica?
We bring the car wherever suits you: the airport, your hotel, your apartment or an agreed address in Podgorica. Our base is in Mojanovići near Podgorica, and you're welcome to collect it there too.
What does the protection cover, and how big is the deposit?
Mandatory insurance is included in every price. Without an extra plan you're liable for any damage to the car, with a refundable deposit. Comfort covers damage to the car with a lower deposit; Summit has no deposit and also covers tyres, rims and glass. Theft is not covered by any plan.
Can I return the car in another town or leave Montenegro?
Yes — a return in another town or at another airport is agreed in advance. Driving into neighbouring countries is possible with our written consent and a Green Card; just mention it when you book.
